This Week @ the Ricks' Home

This has been one crazy week!

With Young Women's camp right around the corner I had lots of crafty gifts to make for 38 young women. One gift a day for certification incentives and devotional gifts for the young women in my cabin, plus all the fun extras to decorate my cabin and make things extra fun and special. After the busy week I had last week I knew I wanted to spend this week working on all the things I needed to get done for camp. So, when I was asked if I could help with Cub Day Camp I said I really didn't think I could with all I need to get done for YW camp. Somehow, that did not get me off the hook.

Just two days, they kept saying. Ok, ok. I'll do it, but I wasn't happy about it. Don't get me wrong, I truly don't mind serving, usually I enjoy it, but this seriously stressed me out. I had SO much on my to-do list and I was feeling spread too thin. This is my first time being in charge of something at YW camp so the pressure is on. I have to have everything planned and put together and packed and ready or things won't happen the way they should at camp! I was also in charge of my first Wednesday night activity since being called as a counselor. Not too much stress there, but we had a little "What Not To Wear" fashion show for which I had to get the things ready and bought. I needed to make an example and get everything ready for Stamp Club Thursday night. And I had to get a few things ready before my last YW camp meeting Friday evening. Then, I was teaching on Sunday and wanted to find some time to focus on the lesson this week.

Sunday night I got maybe two hours of sleep. Gavin and Jordan were too excited about going to camp the next day that they would not sleep. After I finally got Gavin to quiet down and go to sleep, Jordan came marching in my room and asking if I had packed her lunch and wanted to know what time it was. 4:30 am. Go to sleep. Then she looks out the window to see if people drive around at 4:30 am. Seriously? Just GO TO SLEEP! So, she crawls in the bed next to me and KEEPS TALKING. I actually growl at her around 5:30. She said sorry mommy. The alarm went off 30 minutes after that. Guess who's sound asleep. Yep, Jordan. The alarm didn't even wake her. At least she had already gotten dressed for the day, so I let her sleep until it was time to walk out the door.

On the way to camp I ran into a road block. With all the construction going around here I had no idea how to get to where I needed to go from the detour point. With John's help, I finally got there, but we were late.

Jordan was excited about the kid's play area even though she was super shy at first. She played on the playground and made crafts and all sorts of fun stuff.

I had the cushy job at camp, helping the scouts with crafts. We were under the pavillion the entire time. The project was leather stamping. Many of the boys had done this before, so they didn't need much help. Mostly, we made sure the stamps didn't get lost. It was fun watching Gavin with the scouts and spending time with him while he was making his craft.

It was nice talking with the ladies I was working with and getting to know them a little more. I enjoyed working at Cub Day Camp and would like to help out next year in the crafts area, IF I am not overwhelmed with YW camp at the same time. :)

The next morning, I got out of bed as John was crawling into it. He was on the midnight shift all week. I missed him this week. I missed spending time together in the evening and I have such a difficult time falling asleep without him. He did a wonderful job at work this week though. His certification time is coming to an end so he is doing performance on the job training. He pretty much does the job while being observed. I was able to read one of the reviews someone wrote about him this week and she could not say enough good things. She said she wished they could clone him and that any new hires coming up will have a high standard to reach following John. I'm so proud of him and just so grateful he got this job. He applied at so many places and could have been hired by any one of them, but he would have missed out on this job. He enjoys this job and that makes me so happy...and him, too. ;)

I got a reminder phone call that Gavin had his yearly check-up scheduled. I had totally forgotten since I made the appointment a long time ago. Add one more thing to my already overflowing schedule. LOL.

I love our pediatrician! She is so sweet and always seems happy to see us and talk with us. Jordan had lots of problems as a baby so we saw Dr. Roy very regularly. I remember her being pregnant with her first baby. Then, her asking my opinion on how far apart to have another baby. She now has two adorable little boys! She treats me like a friend and cares about my children. At one point, she gave me her personal cellphone number during the time Jordan ate ant poison. Not many doctors give that out. She even said she doesn't usually, but she wanted me to be able to call her anytime I needed. I never had to use it, but it was nice to know how much she cared about my baby.

Gavin is average weight and height and always has been right on the average line. He was happy to find out he didn't need any shots this visit. He did get an asthma inhaler and a prescription for allergy medicine. He had very random allery reactions and had asthma when he was younger. So, we are trying the daily allergy meds and have the asthma inhaler for emergency use.

The last day of Cub Day Camp was cut short due to severe thunderstorms, but Gavin had a great time all week at camp! Super bonus was when he was able to stay the night at his best friend's house during the week.

The "What Not To Wear" Fashion Show was a hit. The Beehives had a great time "dressing-up" for the show. They modeled mini (minnie) shorts, plunging necklines, bare (bear) bellies, tight clothes, spaghetti straps, and thong swimsuits. Remember, thongs are cuter on your feet than they are on your seat. (I found most of the "clothes" ideas online.)

Then we made TP dresses.

Some of the YW decided to dress me in a TP cape. I told them I would race Aryn around the gym in our TP duds. We all laughed so much. Pictures of us running in the gym can be found on FB. :)

Stamp Club was very relaxed this month. The project was very simple and quick. I used a digital kit and printed out a few embellishments to add to photo memory jars.

I've wanted to create something like this since last summer when I saw these on Martha Stewart's site.

Then, I saw this project on a friend's blog and decided I would finally give this idea a try.

My sister, Amy, used this project as the kick in the pants to get to work on a project she's been planning to do as decor for her photography studio.

I really like how it turned out and it shows different ways to use the idea, not just beach or summer vacation photos.

Mostly, we just enjoyed chatting with the girls and eating yummy snacks. We've all been so busy, we just needed a girl's night.

I was able to get a couple of ideas solidified before going to the meeting Friday. Some things aren't working how the other leader and I had planned, so we are trying to figure out different ways of getting things to work for us. I was able to figure out a few ideas to bring with me Friday. We have a new plan for the certification award, but we still need about 20 tin cans! I need to make 30 of these Tin Man face cans before the end of month.

Yeah, I really need cans.

I was finally able to create a cut file to cut the pieces I need to make 38 tiny ruby slippers but I had to argue with my computer for a while to get it to cut correctly.
At least I don't have to hand cut this 38 times!

Now I just need to find time to cut them all and glue them together. There's always next week, but that is my last week before YW Camp. Wish me luck!

Date night this week was an errand run. With John's weird work schedules and different meetings and things we haven't been able to go to the temple in a few weeks. We are really missing that. Those are some of our best date nights.

We went to lots of stores for camp craft supplies and decor, camping needs, and groceries. My sweet husband did surprise me with my favorite dinner...you guessed it...Five Guys. I LOVE the burgers and fries there!

John and I didn't get home until around 8:30 and I still needed to finish up on my lesson! Once we got the kids in bed I was able to really focus.
I found this and knew I had to share it.

It has such a powerful message and was perfect for my lesson on overcoming opposition. Brings tears to my eyes every time I've watched it.

Jordan found a bird nest in the playhouse. I think it is so interesting that the bird included the plastic netting as part of the nest.

During family prayer one night Jordan got us all giggling when she said. "I love that my mom and dad are nice sometimes." Hahaha.

Gavin was talking about cooking food in the crotchpot this week. That got us laughing pretty hard!

As the Fedex man dropped off a package, he asked if we were the Ricks family that posted the video of the tornado. Yep, my husband recorded that. He said when he saw the name on the package he wondered if it was that Ricks family. Apparently, the tornado went inbetween our nieghborhoods. His family lives on the other side of the major destruction. He shared a little about his experience with me. It's interesting to me how experiences like that (the tornado) get rid of the stranger barrier we usually have up.

I had a little growing pain during Sunday School. A sister shared her thoughts about the story of Christ washing the feet of the apostles. She said that she thought about the fact that Christ was going to be crucified the next day but he was still performing service. We all too often have excuses of being too busy to serve or that it is inconvenient. I felt a little stab when she shared that. Wasn't I just acting like that earlier in the week? A little pain to grow on. Yes, I had so much to do this week and I really wasn't able to finish anything for YW camp, but it will still get done even though I gave two days this week to helping the cub scouts.

With every one being all over the place this week we got a little behind on our Book of Mormon reading challenge. So, we decided to catch up as a family and read aloud together before we met Grandma Ricks on the webcam. We had just a few chapters to finish when it was time to start reading with Grandma, but she was happy to read extra with us. Gavin and Jordan love to show off and act silly for Grandma and to see themselves on the computer screen. It makes me happy that they love her so much and get so excited to "see" her.

I hope to get a chance to go to the pool at least once next week. With all the busyness and rainy weather right now we haven't been to the pool in over a week and I miss it! I'm excited for camp but it will also be nice once all the prep is done. After camp, spending summer days at the pool will be back in full swing. :)
