This Week @ the Ricks' Home

Is it June? Really! I can't believe it. But I am so happy for summer!
We have a season pass to the pool and we are seriously loving it.

Natalee spent some of her birthday money on hair color. I was excited to help her color her hair, in the begining anyway. This dye was thick and runny and VERY bright red-orange. It was getting everywhere. I was so frustrated and worried that Natalee was going to have a red ears and neck forever. So, I sort of lost it and got grumpy. I didn't yell, but I raised my voice. I felt really bad. I have been so good about that lately. Bad mommy moment, but I quickly changed my attitude and apologized to our kids.
Natalee loves her new hair color. It looks awesome. John calls her Red. (Well, it looks like blogger sucked some of the saturation from the photo and her hair doesn't look very red. It does in real life especially in the sun!)

Last post I mentioned our new "tuck-in routine" where we read scripture stories before personal prayer. Jordan was so cute when she yelled out, "That is the story we read the other night!" as we were reading from the Book of Mormon during family scripture reading. Yay! She was listening. Sometimes I wonder. Hahaha.

John shared a special moment he experienced with Gavin during "tuck-in time." They are reading the Doctrine and Covenants scripture stories. John read about Samuel Smith being the first missionary. Samuel felt that he had not done very much on his mission but later found through his service Brigham Young joined the church. John took that time to share his testimony of the importance of serving a mission and how you never truly know how much influence a single missionary can have on the lives of hundreds of people. This wasn't the first time John has shared his testimony to Gavin about missionary work and it won't be the last, but it is nice to have extra teaching moments shared just between Gavin and his dad.

One morning, as I was sitting on the edge of my bed saying my morning prayer, Jordan walked over to me and said, "Are you saying personal prayers?" I nodded. She replied, "I'll join you," and pressed her forehead against mine. So sweet.

I have been working on planning a summer Book of Mormom read including fun activities along the way. Things like building our own little boats when we read about Nephi building the boat. So I was really excited when our Bishopric announced the plan for our ward to read the Book of Mormon over the summer. Now it isn't just their parents asking them to read. :)
Originally, John and I thought we would read as a family, then decided to make that our personal study and to continue where we are right now in the Book of Mormon with our family scripture reading.
We have personal scripture reading time every morning as part of our school day so our kids had read pretty far in the Book of Mormon. So, when I asked them to start over, they were a little frustrated about that at first. John and I explained that we wanted to all be reading in the same place as a family and with our ward. They understood. Now every morning after family prayer everyone grabs their scriptures and heads to their quiet spot to read.

I snapped a quick photo of Gavin reading one morning.

He reads out loud with me as Jordan listens. Reading out loud helps Gavin stay focused, plus it is good for him to practice reading out loud.

It has been a great experience already and it's only been a week. As we were gathering together for family scripture reading I jokingly told the kids I have so many places where I'm reading in the Book of Mormon that I can't keep up with which bookmark is saving which place!

We have had a wonderful start to our summer here at the Ricks home.
We hope all of our family and friends had a great start to their summer.
